Section 4- Larbi's Solo Flashcards
What is significant abbout the way Khan interacts with the mannequin?
Khan is sat on top of his mannequin holding the arm so its hand touches his face. This juxtaposes the nurturing action of Kan and his cast with the brutal self criticism of Larbi and his cast.
Explain the movement this picture represents and its interpretation.
Larbi is lay on the floor on his back and pushes himself backwards in a swimming motion towards centre stage. He pushes up on to the heels of his feet. Larbi then hits his chest with his fist then points to Ibral then repeats hitting his chest twice before pointing to Ibral again. This happens in deirect correlation with the beats in the music.
This represents the heartbeat of Larbi and he points to Ibral to show that he is the live one and Ibral is only a cast.
Explain the movement this picture represents and its interpretation. How is it developed?
Larbi moves in to the splits with his head resting on his front knee. His arms are extended behind, reaching out.
This is performed as a very fluid movementshowcasing his extreme flexibility whch is part of his identity as a choreographer.
Explain the movement this picture represents and its interpretation. Include Khan and Larbi.
Larbi is in a contorted position on his knees, performing a backbend so his head is towards his toes with his hand reaching through his legs.
This movement shows the way that Larbi is tying himself in knots of self criticism and anxiety.
Khan is stood over the cast, Marka, stroking his face gently.
Explain the movement this picture represents and its interpretation.
Larbi performs a headstand near Ibral. Compared to Ibral he is completely unside down which may indicate the idea of zero, the two complete opposites. It could also show how Larbi sees himself in a very negative way but the rest of the world sees all his positive traits.
He then comes out of the headstand very fluidly and controlled in to a cheststand creating a ‘C’ shape. This shows his contortion style.
Explain the movement this picture represents and its interpretation.
Larbi is stood towards upstage, stage right. He goes in to a headstand without his hands on the floor. Suddenly he falls flat on his back with his toes towards the audience. He repeats this to fall in to a bridge.
Once again he is showing an exact inversion of Ibral. The sudden and heavy dynamic mimic the stylistic influence of Pina Bausch.
Explain the movement this picture represents and its interpretation.
Larbi is lying on one side with one leg behind his head being held by his opposite hand and the other leg is horizontal along the floor, toes to head.
Again this is a contorted movement which shows how he is tying himself in knots with the tension, conflict and anxiety that he is feeling.
Explain the movement this picture represents and its interpretation.
Larbi performs a backbend downstage centre with his head towards the audience. One foot is placed en pointe and the other hand does gesters such as stroking his chin and doing the cry gesture.
This shows his style and his system of universal gestural communication
Explain the movement this picture represents and its interpretation.
Larbi performs a backwards walkover towardds the audienceand then performs small fast walks on demi-pointe along the centre line towards Ibral.
This movement looks like a tightrope walker and can be seen as Larbi trying to balance the two halves of his life and his heritage. Like walking on a knife edge, tension.
Explain the movement this picture represents and its interpretation.
Larbi performs a handshake with Ibral. He then tries to do a thumb handshake before giving him a fist pump.
These are all universal gestures and show the way that Larbi is struggling to know how to communicate with himself. He tries all three ways until he finds one that they both understand.
Explain the movement this picture represents and its interpretation.
Larbi uses his right arm to pat the shoulder of Ibral. He then grabs Ibral’s left hand and firmly places it upon his own left shoulder. This can represent the praise that he’s giving Ibral and he wants the praise back
Explain the movement this picture represents and its interpretation.
Larbi uses Ibral’s hand to slap him across the face then repeatedly hitting him. He then goes on to repeatedly hit himself on the head using Ibral’s hand to push him down on to his knees.
Larbi is becoming a victim of his own self criticism and doubt.
Explain the movement this picture represents and its interpretation.
Larbi places Ibral’s hands around his own neck. This could show how restricting and suffocating his own self doubts have become.
It is a comedic moment as how silly is it that he is his own victim.
Explain the movement this picture represents and its interpretation.
Larbi puts his arm around Ibral and lifts his left leg up, bent at the knee. Larbi jumps on to Ibral and he falls backwards, ending sat on Ibral with a confused expression on his face.
This coud show how you become so reliant on your own mental state that it doesnt take very much to push you over the edge.
How would your interpretations change if Larbi was performing with Khan’s cast?
If Larbi was to perform with Marka, it would no longer be a duet about exploring yourself and realising who Larbi actually is. It would still look at Larbi’s inner self but throughthe eyes of someone else rather than himself.
