Q

What are the rules for adjusting your unit identification once communication has been established with a pilot?

A

If your position has only 1 function and there is no likelihood of misunderstanding, you may omit the unit name and function
If your position has more than one function, you may omit the unit name, but must state the function for each transmission.

Q

When issuing taxi or ground traffic movement instructions what must we do?

A

Issue instructions as necessary in plain, concise language.
If alternate routes area available, include the specific route
In initial instructions, include only htat portion of the intended route to the first hold area or intermediate point
Amend aircraft taxi of groun traffic movement instructions when necessary. Remember that the last clearance issued takes precedence over and cancels any related item of previous clearance. When you amend a route, re-issue hold short instructions.

17
Q

Describe visual scanning procedures we use before issuing clearances or instructions to airport traffic, and to the extent possible, at other frequent intervals.

A

Be systematic
Scan at least twice to overcome object hypnosis (seeing only things that move)
Move your eyes from one point to another (not a smooth scan)
Go from left to right
Be aware that you can only focus on a small area at a time

18
Q

What is a Report?

A

A call for a vehicle to let you know they have completed a specific action/movement
Especialyl useful in bad visibility where you may have trouble discerning that information visually.

19
Q

How do we describe groups of vehicles?

A

Call sign of the lead vehicle plus the number of accompanying vehicles.

20
Q

What letter do canadian aircraft IDs start with? American? waht are the most common second letters of canadian aircraft IDs?

A

Charlie
November
Golf, Foxtrot

21
Q

What are the procedures when two aircrafft operating on the same frequency have similar call signs or the same flight number?

A

Advise each aircraft of the others presence, for further clarification do one of the following:
for emphasis, restate the telephony designator of the aircraft after the flight number
Add the type of aircraft to the call sign
Instruct on of the pilots ot use the aircraft registration
Instruct one of the pilots to use the telephony designator followed by that last 2 characcters of the aircraft registration

22
Q

What wake turbulences categories do we acknowledge in the flight designator in initial communication?

A

Heavy and Super

23
Q

True or False: You do not always have to say MEDEVAC after the call sign of an aircraft in transmission

A

False, MEDEVAC must but verbally stated in every transmission if applicable

24
Q

What is the phraseology for movement in areas we do not control?

A

At your discretion

25
Q

What is standard pushback procedure?

A

If a pilot request a pushback on the apron, and traffic and workload permity, do the following:

Inform the pilot that pushback is at their discretion
Provide traffic info if required

26
Q

What are our responsibilities concerning aircraft traffic information?

A

Keep aircraft informed of pertinent airport traffic. Provide position information and traffic information to all concerned aircraft to assist them establishing visual separation.

27
Q

What is standard phraseology to ask an aircraft or vehicle to hurry up?

A

Expedite

28
Q

What is standard phraseology to ask an aircraft to come to a dead stop where they are?

A

Hold position

29
Q

What is standard phraseology when we area denying a request?

A

Negative

30
Q

True or false: clearance is required every time we cross a runway?

A

True. However if we own a runway we can provide that clearance in taxi instructions without having to tell the aircraft or vehicle to hold short of the runway

31
Q

Why must we consider wind when issuing taxi instructions?

A

Strong winds could affect the taxi speed of aircraft, especially small aircraft with low power.

32
Q

Define Runway incursion

A

Any occurence at an aerodrome involving the incorrect presence of an aircraft, vehicle or pedestrian on the protected area of a surface designated for landing and takeoff of aircraft.

We can do a runway inspection withou it being an incursion because it involves a vehicle and not an aircraft.

33
Q

What are wigwags?

A

Runway gaurd lights denoting the hold short position

34
Q

What type of clearances do we not issue when controlling ground traffic on the manoeuvring area?

A

Do not issue instructions that permit unrestricted movement of ground traffic on a controlled manoeuvring area, although, you may instruct ground traffic to operate on a single runway and specific taxiways.

Example: do not issues clearances for snow removal on any and all runways at once.

35
Q

Define progressive taxi instructions?

A

Short, step by step instructions. Not a long string of information all at once. It could potentially be confusing to pilkots, especially those that are unfamiliar with a certain aerodrome.

36
Q

What are the position fundamentals prior to commencing any assigned duties?

A

Familiarize yorself with assigned duties
Sign the attendance register
REad and acknowledge all mandatory information, as determined by the unit manager
Review appropriate operational information, for example, NOTAMS, aerodrome conditions, equipment status and weather info

37
Q

What are the 9 steps for relieving a controller?

A

1) If the position is equipped with an electronic log in system that records time prepareing to acccept responsibility for the control position abd on duty in the position, log in according to unit directives.
2) Oberserve operational situations and equipment
3)Listen to communicaiton
4)Observe current and pending traffic
5) Verify the position relief checklist
6)Correlate information
ONce the above are done
7) Inform the controller being relieved that the position has been reviewed and request verbal briefing.
8)Exchange all pertinent dara and ask questions as appropriate to ensure understanding.
9) After the verbal briefing, state, other otherwise indicate clearly to the controller being relieved, that position responsibility has been transferred.

38
Q

What must we do when being relieved?

A

Provide a verbal breifing to the relieving controller using the position transfer checklist

If the communication system permits, record the verbal briefing

Remain with the relieving controller for monitoring purposes. During this time reinforce the position relief briefing and help the relieving controller become fmailiar with the position.

When combining a position, perform the post relieft overlap precedares at the postiion where the operation was combined.

39
Q

What conditions must be met to assist a colleague?

A

The responsible controller asks for assistance and specifies the assistance required

You inform the responsible controller of the assistance you will be providing and receive approval. (no helping unrequested just to be nice)

40
Q

When must a controller provide information about known traffic and obstructions to aircraft taxiing outside the manoeuvring area?

A

When workload permits

41
Q

If you are the only qulified person working at a unit, what must you do to temporarily vacate your position?

A

Follow unit procedures (each unit will have specific requirments to do this)

42
Q

If a section of the manoeuvring area is not visible, what must you tell the pilot?

A

Inform them that that area is not visible and inform them of traffic or obstructions.
Inform them that they are operating at their discretion
