Exam prep 3 Flashcards
Can a tower controller override the prevailing visibility report of a certified weather observer if they disagree with it?
No but they can if the report comes from an AWOS that appears to be misfunctioning.
What are the conditions for ACTs to be active at march
Visibility 5 miles or greater and ceiling of at least 2500 feet
What do we have to change when we change the actvie runway
Update the ATIs
The runway lighting
The active runway in EXCDS
Alert terminal of the change
What does th runway code 88 mean
Aircraft flying through the zone. 88a is for an aircraft entering the zone and staying for a period of time, 88b is for the completion of the action in 88a and then subsequently leaving the zone
You may vector an IFR aircraft within the control zone provided responsibility for control has been transferred to the tower and any fo the following are true:
Pilot requests it
You suggest it and the pilot accepts it
You consider it necessary for flight safety
We do not vector aircraft on a sid or a star
You may use one runway for light VFR and one runway for IFR and heavy VFR provided:
The pilot accepts the suggested runway
The surface wind component permits the use of more than 1 runway
You may vector a VFR aircraft within the control zone for what 3 reasons?
To provide navigational assistance
EStablish visual separation
Establish approach sequence
Why would a pilot ask for the inactive runway?
Shorter taxiways
\decreased flight times
Reduced fuel consumption
Longer runway
Different approach
You may assist a controlloer provided one of the following is true:
The responsible controller asks for help and specifies the type of assistance required
You inform the controller of the assistance you will be providing and receive approval
IS visibilty reduced by darkness
No
When do we update the ATIS
NEW METAR or SPECI issued
Altimeter change by more than plus or mnus 0.4
the IFR appraoch has changed
Active runway change
NOTAM updates
Changei n runway conditions
SIGMET AIRMET or PIREP recieved, updated or cancelled
What do you need to tell the pilot if you are using a runway with a tailwind
Clearly indicate the wind speed and direction
Runway is dry
Tailwind component of wind is less than 5 knots
IF a pilot has the ATIS what information must we still share with them?
The active runway
