SDG 6 Flashcards
description
This SDG aims to achieve universal access to safe drinking water and sanitation for all people.
It aims to improve water quality by reducing contaminants as well as increase water-use efficiency to promote sustainability.
It also aims to support the participation of local communities in improving water and sanitation management.
why is important
•Lack of Access to safe water and sanitation will lead to contaminated water and an increase in mortality rates from communicable disease such as diarrhoea and typhoid particularly amongst children, leading to increased infant and U5MR.
Children who do not have safe water sources close to their homes will have to spend hours collecting water; therefore, cannot attend school. This can affect their ability to devlop their health literacy.
global health
• Access to safe water and sanitation will lead to a reduction in contaminated water and a reduction in morbidity rates from communicable disease such as diarrhoea and typhoid particularly amongst children, improving the efficient functioning of the body and it’s systems.
Children who have safe water sources close to their homes will not have to spend hours collecting water; therefore, can attend school. This can assist them in developing health literacy through which they can learn basic hygiene practices, thus increasing reducing prevalence of communicable diseases.
human development
- With access to clean, uncontaminated drinking water, children will not be falling ill from dirty water, allowing them to be well enough to go to school where they can enhance their knowledge, capabilities and develop to their full potential.
- With access to clean water and sanitation services, more adults will experience better health and stronger immune systems which will allow them to work more productively, earning a greater income for decent standard of living.
links to SDG 3
- Through ensuring to achieve universal and equitable access to safe and affordable drinking water , it will help to combat deaths and ill health related to waterborne diseases such as cholera and typhoid .
- Through ensuring to achieve universal and equitable access to safe and affordable drinking water, it will reduce risk of diarrhoeal diseases in children helping to reduce the infant and under 5 mortality rate
- Through enable access to adequate and equitable sanitation and hygiene for all , especially for girls at school will enhance female attendance and where they can develop health literacy, such as importance of spacing births, reducing risk of maternal mortality .
