SDG 1 Flashcards
SDG 1 name
no poverty
SDG 1 description
Goal 1 seeks to remove poverty and inequality within and among nations. The aim is to end poverty in all its
forms by 2030.
Why is SDG 1 important
• If people are unable to afford food due to lack of money it can lead to hunger and malnutrition which in turn weakens the immune system leading to increased mortality/morbidity from infectious diseases.
If people who cant work due to illness don’t have access to social security systems they wont be able to access health care which can increase morbidity from easily preventable diseases.
How can SDG 1 work towards improving health and wellbeing and human development globally?
Health and wellbeing
• If no one lives in extreme poverty people are able to afford food which can prevent hunger and malnutrition which in turn strengthens the immune system leading to decreased mortality/morbidity from infectious diseases.
• Increased access to social security systems will reduce the stress for individuals who are unable to work due to illness improving mental health and well being.
Human development
• With increased incomes, people are able to afford to access basic resources such as food, shelter and water, allowing them to experience a decent standard of living.
• By increasing family incomes, parents will be able to afford to send their children to school, allowing them participate in their community and reach their full potential while enhancing their knowledge.
How is SDG 1 related to SDG3?
- Through eradicating extreme poverty nutritious food can be provided to children which allows them to develop strong immune systems to protect themselves from illness and reduce the infant and under 5 mortality rate.
- Through implementing social protection systems, people in need who aren’‘t able to work due to illness can access medicines and vaccinations which reduces the risk of communicable diseases.
What are Social protection measures/system
Social protection measures/systems are put in place to prevent individuals and families from suffering from poverty because of a crisis or another unexpected event. They include healthcare, income security for children, those who become sick or disabled and the elderly.
