Scope, Outlook, and Perspectives Flashcards
Somatic Division (PNS)
Sensory info to CNS and motor info from CNS
Autonomic division (PNS)
Connects CNS to internal organs
Ontogeny
The process by which an individual changes throughout its life span
5 perspectives
- Describing behavior
- Studying the evolution of behavior
- Development of behavior
- Biological mechanisms
- Applications
Somatic intervention
Alteration of a structure or function to see how its behavior is impacted
Behavioral intervention
Intervention in behavior to see how structure or function is impacted
Neuroplasticity
The ability of the brain to be changed by environment and experience
Correlation
Measures how much a body measure varies with a behavioral measure
Mentalism
Behavior is a function of the mind and the mind is a non-material entity
Dualism
-both non-material mind and material body interact to produce behavior
-mind controls rational behavior
-body and brain control other behaviors via mechanical and physical principles
-Mind controls body via pineal gland
Problems with dualism
-The pineal gland is not involved in intelligence or behavioral control
-fluid isn’t pumped from ventricles
-violates the law of conservation of energy
Materialism
-behavior can be fully explained by the nervous system
-supports the theory of evolution
