SCIENCE WEEK 5 - CAUSES OF PLATE MOVEMENT Flashcards
it is a process where heat is transferred from one place to another
Convection
the movement of energy from one place to another
Heat Transfer
Proposed by Arthur Holms in 1929; Describe the movement of the mantle as it transfer heat from the white-hot core to the brittle lithosphere
Convection Currents
are caused by a heated molten rock in the mantle becomes less dense and rise. At the same time other molten cools and become more dense so they sink.
Convection Currents
Driving Forces of Plate Tectonics
Mantle Convection
Ridge Push
Slab Pull
Slab Suction
is caused by gravitational force, and it exists because the ridge occur at a higher elevation than the rest of the ocean floor; a driving force for plate motion in plate tectonics that occurs at the mid-ocean ridges as the result of a rigid lithosphere slidingdown the hot, raised asthenosphere below mid-ocean ridges.
Ridge Push
It is the force exerted by the weight of the subducted slab on the plate it is attached to; The denser plate sinks back into the mantle under the influence of the gravity. It pulls the rest of the plate along behind it.
Slab Pull
occurs between two colliding plates, one subducting underneath the other, whereby convection currents in the upper mantle suck both plates down.
Slab Suction
Resisting forces of the Plate Tectonics
Slab Resistance
Bending Resistance
Colliding Resistance
Transform Fault Resistance
