Science Vocab: 3.1 Flashcards
The combination of all forces acting on an object
Net force
The acceleration of an object is in the same direction as the net force on the object
Newton’s second law of motion
The force that opposes the sliding motion of two surfaces that are touching each other
Friction
The frictional force that prevents two surfaces from sliding past eachother
Static friction
The force that opposes the motion of two surfaces sliding past each other
Sliding friction
Opposes the motion of objects that move through the air
Air resistance
An attractive force between any z objects that depends on the masses of the objects and the distance between them
Gravity
The gravitational force exerted on an object
Weight
Acceleration toward the center of a curved or circular path
Centripetal acceleration
To every action force there is an equal and opposite reaction force
Newton’s third law
The product of its mass and velocity
Momentum
Describes the sped and direction of a moving object
Velocity
The rate of change of velocity which occurs when an object changes speed or direction
Acceleration
The net force exerted toward the center of a curved path
Centripetal force
