Science Plant Reproduction Unit Flashcards
What is Asexual reproduction
Asexual Reproduction is when part of a plant is cut off to for a new one
What is sexual reproduction?
When 2 plants breed.
What happens in Sexual Reproduction
In sexual reproduction, each parent produces a special type of cell called gamete. These cells join and their nuclei fuse in a process called fertilization. This forms a fertilized egg cell. This cell can then grow and develop and form an embryo. This process produces offspring that can all look different from one another; an example of inherited variation.
What is Pollination
Pollination is the transfer of pollen from the anther to the stigma. Pollination can be caused by insects or wind.
What are some Wind Pollination Adaptations
- Very light pollen
• Large number of pollen grains
• Large anther outside the flower
• Feathery stigma outside the flower
What are some Insect Pollination Adaptations
- Large, bright coloured petals
- A sweet smell
- Contain nectar
- Sticky or spikey pollen
What is Cross-Pollination
When the pollen goes from the Anther of one flower to the Stigma of another flower.
What is Self-Pollination
Occurs when the Anther of one flower transfers to the Stigma of the same flower
What is Fertilization
The action or process of fertilizing an egg or a female animal or plant, involving the fusion of male and female gametes to form a zygote.
What is a gamete
Plants produce 2 separate sex cells, a female (egg) and a male (sperm). These cells are called gametes.
What is a pistil/carpel
Female part of a flower (consists of: Stigma, Style, and Ovary)
What is a stamen
Male part of a flower (consists of: Anther and Filament}
What is Germination
Germination is when a seed starts growing.
How does Germination Occur?
It occurs whenever:
- Water enters the seed, and it swells up
- The seed coat becomes softer
- The embryo grows through the seed
What is the Embryo
the young root and shoot that will become the adult plant
