Science Mixtures Unit Flashcards
What is suspension?
A mixture of two substances which will separate if not stirred. Eg. sand in water
What is a solution?
A mixture where a solid dissolves into a liquid and the mixture is clear or transparent. Solute + Solvent = Solution. E.g: Saltwater.
What is a pure substance and how can it be broken down?
It has only one type of atom or one type of compound. It cannot be broken down without a chemical reaction. Eg. Oxygen
What is a mixture and how can it be separated?
It contains two or more different substances which are not chemically joined. The mixture can be separated by physical methods. Eg. fruit salad
What is a colloid?
When one substance is dispersed in the other. It will not separate. The mixture is opaque or cloudy.
Give me an example of suspension
sand in water, cornstarch in water.
Give me an example of a solution
sugar water, saltwater
Give me and example of a colloid
milk, mayonnaise, ink, hair spray, Styrofoam
What is is filtration?
Filtration is when you use a filter to separate bigger particles from the liquid part of a mixture.
What is distillation ?
Distillation is when you evaporate a liquid, collect the steam and condense/cool it.
What is boiling?
Whenever a liquid is heated up to its boiling point. We know this happens when bubbles show through the liquid and the liquid is very hot
What is Evaporation?
It is the process of water turning from liquid to condensation – is the process of water converting from a gas to liquid. This can happen at any temperature, but happens faster at higher temperatures
What is a Solvent
The liquid its dissolving into
What is a Soluble
Something that WILL dissolve
What is a Solution
Mixture of a solute and a solvent that doesn’t separate without Physical Methods
