Geography - Coasts Flashcards
What is the definition of a coast?
An area where land meets the sea.
State 3 advantages and disadvantages of living near coasts.
Advantages:
Increases your happiness.
High Vitamin D levels.
Reduces Stress.
Disadvantages:
Unpredictable Weather
Cost of Repairs
Sand
List 3 industries and give me the definitions.
- Primary Industry: gathering of raw materials and other resources from Earth.
- Secondary Industry: involved in manufacturing something from the collected materials.
- Tertiary Industry: Providing services.
Give me examples of Primary, Secondary and Tertiary Industry.
Primary: Mining, Farming, Fishing.
Secondary: Car manufacturers, blacksmith.
Tertiary: Teacher, fireman, police.
What is weathering and erosion?
- Weathering: Rocks and other rock materials are broken down into smaller pieces.
- Erosion: Removal of weathered material, usually by wind or water.
What are the 3 weathering processes and give me definitions of them.
- Mechanical: when physical forces break rock into smaller pieces.
- Chemical: decomposition of rock material by chemical alteration.
- Biological: weakening and subsequent disintegration of rocks by living things.
What is Freeze Thaw?
- When water flows into cracks of rocks, the water starts to freeze and expand, the process repeats until the rock is broken.
- Common in mountainous regions.
What is Onion Skin?
- Happens when a rock is repeatedly heated and cooled.
- As its heated, the rock expands and as it cools, it contracts.
- The continuous expansion and contraction causes the surface of the rock to peel off.
What is Chemical Weathering?
- Erosion or disintegration of rocks.
- Ordinary rainwater contains small amount of acid, when it touches the rock, the rock erodes.
What is Biological Weathering?
- Weakening and disintegration of rocks from living things.
- Growing plant roots can add pressure on the rock.
What can waves do?
- Erode, transport and deposit.
What are the 4 types of coastal erosion and tell me the definitions.
- Hydraulic Action: When waves force air into cracks in the rocks which help it break up.
- Abrasion: When waves bring bits of stone and grind the rock, wearing it away, this is sandpapering effect.
- Attrition: When rock fragments carried by sea knock against each other causing them to be smaller and smoother.
- Solution: Water dissolves soluble particles by sea water, this is aided by acid in sea water.
