SCIENCE Flashcards
What is symbiosis
It is the relationship between organisms of different species that show an intimate association with each other.
What is the one requirement for symbiosis
For at least one species in the relationship to have a nutritional advantage.
What are the 3 types of symbiosis
Parasitism, Commensalism, Mutualism
What is parasitism
It is where there are two species one is called the parasite, and one is called the host, the parasite harms the host, and in the process, gains a nourishment.
What are parasites
Parasites are chemoautotrophs. Which means that they take inorganic chemical as their energy source and turn it into their energy.
What are the two different types of parasites
Ectoparasites, and Endoparasites
What are endoparasites and what are examples of them
On the externals of their hosts. Some example of them are ticks, fleas, leeches
What are endoparasites and what are examples of them
Endoparasites are parasites that are usually on the interior of their host. Some examples of them are liver flukes, tapeworms, malarial parasites
What are microparasites
They are small microscopic parasites that have a short generation time (the time between the organisms birth, to the time it gives birth). The duration of the infection of the parasite is very short compared to the lifespan of the host.
Ex: bacteria, viruses, ect
What are macroparasites
Macroparasites are parasites that have longer generation time than microparasites. They have the tendency to persist causing their host to become reinfected by them many times.
