Botany Flashcards
What is Gibberellin
It is the chemical that helps in cell elongation of the stem and fruit
What is auxin
It is the chemical that helps in cell elongation of the shoot, helps in phototropism because it moves to the darker side of a plant, then it moves the plant in the direction of the light
What is Cytokinin
It is the chemical that helps plant cells split and make new cells
What is Abscisic acid
It is the chemical that stops growth, in hot climates it closes the stomata, and when in bad conditions it stops germination in seeds.
What is Ethylene
It is the gas that helps fruits ripen
What is a pinnatifid leaf
When the leaf is divided but not fully to the midrib
What is a decompound leaf
It is when leaves have divisions that are compound themselves
What is the rachis of a plant
The rachis is an extension of the petiole, the rachis is the midrib
What is a palmate leaf
Where the leaves are attached to the tip of the petiole, can be like a maple leaf, but can also be a lot deeper
Dicots usually have what 2 characteristics
Reticulate venation and taproot system
Monocots usually have what 2 characteristics
Parallel venations and fibrous root system
What are the two different types of angiosperms
Monocot and dicot
What are the two different types of dicots
Rosids and asterids
What is reticulate/netted venation
It is where the veins cross/intersect each other, like a net, found in dicots
What is parallel venation
What the veins are straight, they are parallel to each other on the leaf, found in monocots
