schizophrenia - interactionist approach Flashcards
what is the interactionist approach?
is an approach that acknowledges that there are biological, psychological and social factors in the development of schizophrenia.
the diathesis-stress model
diathesis = vulnerability
stress = negative experience.
both work together in the development of schizophrenia when there is a stress-trigger.
meehl’s model
entirely genetic - schizogene, the gene led to the development if a schizotypic personality.
modern understanding of stress
stress was seen as psychological in nature. psychological stress is still seen as important, a modern definition of stress inclused anything that risk =s triggering schizophrenia e.g., cannabis (houston et al 2008)
treatment
turkington et al 2006 points out that it is perfectly possible to believe in biological causes of schizophrenia and still practise cbt to relieve psychological symptoms.
