relationships - virtual relationships Flashcards
what two theories have been proposed linking to virtual relationships?
reduced cues theory
hyper-personal model
who introduced the reduced cues theory?
sproull and kiesler (1986)
what is the reduced cues theory?
it was suggested that CMC relationships are less effective due to the lack of non-verbal cues.
what are non-verbal cues?
physical appearance and our emotional responses.
why are these cues important?
there are important because we rely on these cues and if there is a lack of cues, it can lead to de-individuation.
who introduced the hyper personal model?
walther (1996 and 2011)
what is the hyper personal model?
this suggests that early self-disclosure and cmc relationships can develop quickly because they become more personal compared to ftf interactions.
feature one
the sender can be selective about what and how they can present themselves when self-disclosing e.g., presenting yourself as more positive light.
feature 2
the receiver will gain a positive impression of the sender which can lead to the reinforcement for the sender’s selective self-presentation
what was another factor that promotes virtual relationships?
anonymity
what is a gate?
any feature/ obstacle that could interfere with the development of a ftf relationship
what are the benefits of gating?
gates are absent
refocus attention on self-disclosure
more freedom
what is the drawback of gating?
a person can make an untrue identity and deceive and manipulate others
