self-disclosure is when you reveal personal information.

what is the social penetration theory?
it focuses on how relationships develop, this is by gradually revealing emotions and experiences and being able to listen to their partner, and then this can be reciprocated by the other partner. this helps the people get a greater understanding of each other and leading to the development of trust
what is the onion analogy?
when we penetrate deeper and deeper into private and personal matters. altman and taylor described this as peeling back the layers of an onion.
what is breadth and depth of self-disclosure?
when both increase it leads to the romantic partners becoming more committed to each other. at the beginning of the relationship, we disclose a lot about ourselves but what is revealed is superficial. when the relationship develops, the self-disclosure becomes deeper.

what is reciprocity of self-disclosure?
if you decide to share deep information then you would hope that your partner would do the same, however if this does not happen and one exposures more than the other it can lead to a breakdown in trust.
