schizophrenia - biological explanations Flashcards
who said schizophrenia runs in families?
gottesman (1991)
what does it mean by schizophrenia running in families?
if there is genetic similarity between family members can lead to the association with the likelihood of developing schizophrenia.
what did gottesman say?
in mono-zygotic twins they share 100% of the same genes leading to a 48% chance of developing schizophrenia and in diozygotic twins they share 50% of the same genes which means there is a 17% risk of developing schizophrenia.
candidate genes
schizophrenia is polygenic and is aetiologically heterogenous
who has research supporting this?
ripke et al (2014)
what did ripke study?
combined all previous data from genome-wide studies of schizophrenia, and had the genetic makeup of 37,000 patients and compared them to 113,000 controls and found 108 separate variation.
what is the role of mutation?
it means when the male gamete called sperm mutates due to radiation, poison, and viral infections.
brown et al 2002
positive correlation between parental age and risk of developing schizophrenia.
