what is schizophrenia?
a severe mental disorder, characterised by profound disruptions in thinking. this can affect language, perception, emotions and the sense of self.
what classifications are used to diagnose schizophrenia?
icd-10 = two negative symptoms
dsm-5 = one positive symptom
what are positive symptoms?
are atypical symptoms experienced in addition to normal experiences.
what are negative symptoms?
are atypical experiences that represent the loss of a usual experience.
examples of positive symptoms:
hallucinations = unusual sensory experiences
delusions = irrational beliefs.
examples of negative symptoms:
avolition = finding it difficult to begin or keep up with goal-directed activity.
speech poverty = changes in patterns of speech
what is co-morbidity?
the occurrence of 2 illnesses or conditions together.
what is symptom overlap?
occurs when 2 or more conditions share symptoms.
