what is cultural bias?
the act of interpreting and judging behaviour and psychological characteristics of one culture by holding them to the standards of your own.
what is ethnocentrism?
judging other cultures by the standards and values of one’s own culture.
example of ethnocentrism?
ainsworth’s strange situation (1970)
what is cultural relitivism?
the principle of regarding the beliefs, values, and practices of a culture from the viewpoint of that culture itself.
what did berry (1969) propose?
etic and emic approaches for human behaviour.
what is the etic approach?
looks at behaviour from outside of a given culture = attempting to describe behaviour as universal.
what is the emic approach
functions from within or inside certain cultures = behaviours are specific to that culture.
