Schaffer stages of attachment Flashcards
what are multiple attachments
attachments to two or more people which often occurs after an attachment has been made with a main carer.
what was the Schaffer and Emerson study 1964
between 25 and 32 weeks of age about 50% if the babies showed separation anxiety towards a specific adult. The attachment was usually shown to the caregiver who was the most interactive and sensitive to the needs of the child. by 40 weeks 80% showed specific attachments and nearly 30% showers multiple attachments
evaluation of Schaffer and emerson study
There are issues with asking the mothers to be the observers as they were unlikely to be objective observers. They might have been biased in terms of what they noticed and what they reported.
One limitation of the schaffer and emerson study
the validity of the measures they used to assess attachment in the asocial stage.
what is the asocial stage?
very young infants are asocial in that many kinds of stimuli, both social and non-social
what is indiscriminate attachment
infants indiscriminately enjoy human company and most babies respond equally to any caregiver. 3 months infants smile more
what are specific attachments
special preference for a single attachment figure. they show fear towards strangers and unhappy when separated from a special person.
Bowlby (1969)
suggest that most babies develop attachments to a single main carter before they develop multiple attachments
Bowlby (1969) - room
a child may become distressed when a playmate leaves the room but that does not signify attachment
