biopsych: nervous and endocrine system - Y12 Flashcards
what is the nervous system?
a highly complex part of an animal which consists of the central nervous system and the peripheral nervous system.
what is the central nervous system?
the origins of all complex commands and decisions which is made up of the brain and the spinal cord.
what is the peripheral nervous system?
a system in the body which sends information to the central nervous system from the outside world and transmits messages from the cns to the muscles and glands in the body.
what is the somatic nervous system
a subdivision of the peripheral nervous system which transmits info from the receptor cells in the sense organs to the central nervous system and receives info from the ins which direct muscles to act voluntarily
what is the autonomic nervous system
a system which transmit info to and from internal bodily organs, operates involuntary and has two divisions ; sympathetic and parasympathetic
which nervous system has sensory and motor pathways?
somatic nervous system
which nervous system is purely motor?
autonomic nervous system
which nervous system controls skeletal/muscle movement?
somatic nervous system
which nervous system controls internal organs and the glands of the body?
autonomic
what is the endocrine system
one of the bodies major information systems that instructs glands to release hormones directly into the bloodstream. theses hormones are carried towards target organs in the body
what are glands
glads are an organ in the body which synthesises substances such as hormones
what are hormones?
chemical substances that circulate in the bloodstream and only effect target organs. they are produced in large quantities but disappear quickly and the effects are very powerful.
what is the fight or flight response?
the way that an animal responds when stressed. the body becomes physiologically aroused in readiness to fight an aggressor or flee.
what is adrenaline?
a hormone produced by the adrenal glands which is part of the human body’s immediate stress response system. Adrenaline has a strong effect on the cells of the cardiovascular system ; stimulating the heart rate, dilating air passages etc.
what controls vital functions in the body?
the endocrine system
