quicker if previous exposure, bc its a hypersensitivity allergic reaction
clinical signs of scabies
intense pruritis
papule from mite burrowing in stratum corneum -> intense itching(excoriations, crusts, alopecia) -> secondary infection areas of low hair density: ventral abdomen, margins of pinna, hocks, elbows
chronic signs of scabies
hyperpigmentation
lymphadenopathy
weight loss
hyperglobulinemia
Norwegian scabies
rare
thick crusts
numberous mites
***little pruritis! (b/c immunosuppressed, on steroids, or puppies)
scabies incognito
well groomed animals
intense prurities
no lesions
does a negative skin scrape r/o scabies?
nope
treat and see how it responds
scabies therapy
topical - lime sulfur (also helps with itching) - selamectin(revolution) - fipronil (frontline) systemic - ivermectin (heartgard) - milbemycin
if an animal has scabies what should you consider
treat all animals its been in contact with.
treat secondary infection
may stay itchy bc of hypersensitivity and need steroids in addition to treatment of mites
if you’ve given steroids and the dogs still itchy
think scabies, food or yeast
everything should get better with steroids
feline scabies
notoedres
extreme pruritis, erythema, crusting, papules on head and neck, pinna
therapy feline scabies
dipping wouldnt be fun
- revolution! or advantage multi
- ivermectin is rough
cheyletiella
not in florida, easily killed by flea products
large mite
can be zoonotic!

often puppies
dorsal distribution!!
in cats may have pruritis
diagnosis of cheyletiella
flea comb, skin scrab, tape flakes look under microscope
therapy for cheyletiella
pyrethrin
lime sulfur dip
ivermectin
**dont use fipronil on a rabbit
pediculosis
lice
lice zoonosis?
no! lice are host specific!
