Nodular skin diseases Flashcards
sporotrichosis
we get yeast form in tissue, a wound that gets inoculated
zoonotic! wear gloves when handling cats! often history of poor response to abx
therapy for sporotrichosis
**itraconazole, keetoconazole
iodides (used to be drug of choice)
kerion
typical dog sticking nose in holes, dermatophyte gets shoved into the dermis and then causes inflam, FB type reaction
dermatophytic pseudomycetoma
SC nodules
grains in cytology! loaded with hypae
pythium
fungus like organism
no ergosterol so no good treatment!
tropical areas, penetrates cuts, normally a plant parasites, likes water
- intense pruritis, rapid ulcerative response
course very different from acral lick granuloma
pythium treatment
amphotericin B
itraconazole with doxy
lagenidiosis
like pythium but spreads systemically so worse
zygomycosis
needs port of entry again
some respond to anti-fungal therapy
bacterial infection nodules
deep pyoderma (staph intermedius, pseudomonasl) acral lick dermatitis- raised ulcerative mass (demodex, FAD!!)
mycobacteria (opportunistic)
cats! inoculated by trauma
starts with bumpy ulcers and then ventral abdomen gets worse and worse, draining tracts in paniculis (lipids)
dont do surgery, they’ll dehiss!!
**systemically happy
nocardia
looks like mycobacteria but cat is way sicker! generalized systemic disease
sterile nodular panniculitis
more in dog
systemically ill with flare up
sterile pyogranuloma
typically on the head
rule out infections first
if you see nodules, especially if you’re thinking immunosuppresion
