Autoimmune Flashcards
pemphigus complex
type II cytotoxic (IgG) against desmogleins. detachment of cells, acantholytic cells!
classic pemphigus pattern
butterfly pattern
around eyes and nose
most common pemphigus in vet med
breeds ages predisposed?
p. foliaceus
chows, collies
middle aged
primary lesion of p. foliaceus
and clinical signs
pustule -> crusting, scaling (superficial disease)
hyperkeratosis of footpads
*nail beds in cats
acantholytic cells
keratinic cells that have lost connection
typical of pemphigus (but can be seen in other diseases)
waxes and wanes
autoimmune diseases
pemphigus erythematosus
looks like p. foliaceus
(cross between p.f. and lupus) milder than pf and more isolated to the face
ab in intercellular spaces of epidermis (pf) and in basement membrane (like lupus)
P. vulgaris
deeper abs, most common in humans
**ulcerative
typically starts **inside the mouth*
p. vegetans
very rare
more proliferative, more mild than p vulgaris
discoid lupus erythematosus
benign form of lupus
likes the nose area
also aggravated by light
(collies and shepards)
systemic lupus
multisystemic disease
ab produced against different ags. (RBC, platelet, nuclear antigens)
**vasculitis (in extremities)
systemic lupus clinical signs
ulcerated necrotic lesions on tip of ears and tail and center of food pads
bullous pemphigoid
no acantholytic cells but looks like p.v.
ab against basement membrane causes ulcers esp in the mouth.
have to diagnose with biospy and treat with immune suppressant
autoimmune diseases
erythema multiforme
macules with clear centers
(target lesions)
can look ulcerative if they get severe enough
biopsy a macule not an ulcer!!
