Food and Contact Allergy Flashcards
in dogs the food allergy is the _______ component.
protein
food allergy is typically a type ___ hypersensitivity
2-4?
common food allergens
beef, eggs, soybean, chicken
distribution of pruritis
face, feet, ears (resembles AD)
some perineal
food allergy looks a lot like
atopic dermatitis
also flea and scabies
clinical signs of food allergy
*bright red
recurrent moist dermatitis, papular, macular eruption, scaling, lichenification, excoriatoin, crusting- concurrent GI symptoms, v/d, bloating
feline food allergy
look like miliary derm, pruritis, eosinophilic granuloma - just a normal allergic cat presentation
diagnosis for food allergy
*food trial!
skin test and serology are both non reliable
homemade v. commercial
homemade b/c some dogs get desensitized to preservatives
length of food trial?
want to see if itching decreases
- depends on how often dog relapses into infection - food trial needs to be longer than the time to relapse
hydrolyzed diets only help for
hypersensitivity type I
and will actually increase risk for type IV
disadvantage of hydrolyzed diets
leave dogs hungry, they’ll end up chewing on something, add pumpkin or other fiber to help hunger
royal canin anallergenic (ultamino)
hydrolyzed feathers
works well but very expensive
rechallenge?
necessary to confirm the diagnosis
recurrence within hours to 7 days
need to confirm and know what the allergen is
contact allergy
- typically plants in florida
- type IV t-cell delayed, 2-6 month sensitization period
- one animal in household affected (vs. irritant affects all)
- papules (v. irritant - vesicles)
- pruritis w/o pain
