Feline Dermatoses Flashcards
miliary dermatitis syndrome
“scabby cat disease”
its a symptom, a reaction pattern.
- papular ‘seedy’ eruption, easier to feel
- **dorsal neck and black
underlying causes of miliary dermatitis
allergies
parasites
fungus
fleas
palliative short term treatments for miliary dermatitis
depomedrol
prednisolone(not prednisone)
other immunomodulating agents
eosinophilic granuloma complex
manifestations include (diff reaction patterns)
- indolent ulcer
- eosinophilic plaque
- collagenolytic granuloma
indolent ulcer
inflammatory ulcer located on the upper lip
- unilateral or bilateral
- could also hae nodular pharyngeal granuloma
- associated with allergy, rarely progresses to squamous cell carcinoma
treatment for indolent ulcer in cat
long term - find underlying cause, flea control
short term - abx for secondary infection, steroids to blunt immune response. cyclosporin
eosinophilic plaque
well circumscribed red yellow, typical groin and medial thigh.
super itchy.
- associated with allergy (esp. FAD) usually
eosinophilic plaque diagnosis and treatment
- clinical signs, histopath
- control underlying allergy!!
(food, fleas, ASIT) can use glucocorticoids or cyclosporine
collagenolytic granuloma
three forms
linear - raised on caudal hind legs, variable pruritis
nodular phargyngeal - usually associated with indolent ulcer
chin form - fat chin
diagnosis and treatment of collagenolytic granuloma
- clin signs, histopath
- steroids, look for allergy!
common cat allergies
flea environmental food contact mosquito
feline mosquito hypersensitivity
seasonal, nonpruritic
outdoor cats
papular ulcerative lesions on nose, ear pinna (where hair is thin) foot pads
feline alopecia
self induced (pruritis-allergy, behavioral- closet groomer?) endocrine (differentiated by a trichogram)
trichography
dying hair roots are sharp/tapered (telogen resting phase)
vs. self induced - growing phase, fracture tips
endocrine causes of cat alopecia are
very rare
