SC8g Solubility Flashcards
precipitation reaction?
soluble substances react to form an insoluble solid
what is an insoluble solid called?
precipitate
what is soluble in water?
~all common sodium, potassium and ammonium salts
~all nitrates
~most chlorides
~most sulfates
~sodium, potassium and ammonium carbonates
~sodium, potassium and ammonium hydroxides
what is insoluble in water?
~silver, lead chlorides
~lead, barium, calcium sulfates
~most carbonates
~most hydroxides
how is a pure dry sample of an insoluble salt prepared?
~wear goggles
~mix the 2 solutions in a beaker and filter the mixture
~rinse the beaker with a little distilled water and pour this through the funnel
~pour a little distilled water over the precipitate in the funnel
~carefully remove the filter paper containing the precipitate and dry it in a warm oven
what is the precipitate?
lead nitrate + sodium chloride → lead chloride + sodium nitrate
lead chloride
explain why the beaker is rinsed with a little distilled water and the washings are poured through the funnel?
to rinse out any precipitate left inside the beaker
explain why distilled water is poured over the precipitate in the funnel?
to wash the precipitate and remove any soluble product
