SC13d Alloys and their Uses Flashcards
why make alloy metals?
alloys are stronger than pure metals
why are alloys stronger than pure metals?
in pure metals all the atoms are the same size and arranged regularly in layers allowing them to easily move over each other
in alloys the different elements can be different sizes which distorts the regular structure making it more difficult for the layers to slide over each other
how is stainless steel better? 2
~resists rusting unlike other alloy steels and irons
~contains chromium which reacts with the air to form a thin layer of chromium oxide protecting the metal underneath
what are tool steals used in?
drill bits
why can stronger steels be negative and what are these used for?
harder to shape but can be used to make car parts
mild alloy steels facts?
~less carbon than high strength steel
~contains manganese to make it stronger but still malleable
~often used as building materials and for car body panels
aluminium uses and why?
overhead electrical cables as it is strong, cheaper, less dense and resists corrosion
what alloy is brass?
copper and zinc
use of brass? and why?
pins in electrical plugs because brass is strong
what alloy is magnalium?
95% aluminium and 5% magnesium
uses of magnalium? and why?
aircraft parts and scientific instruments because it is strong but lightweight and more resistant to corrosion
