SC20e Combustible Fuels and Pollution Flashcards
how is sulfur dioxide produced?
through sulfur impurities in fossil fuels which burn when the fuels burn
sulfur + oxygen →
sufur dioxide
how is acid rain made?
sulfur dioxide dissolves in water in clouds forming a mixture of acids including sulphurous acid
this acid is oxidised with oxygen from the air forming sulfuric acid
equations linked with the formation of acid rain?
sulfur dioxide + water→ sulphurous acid
SO₂ + H₂O → H₂SO₃
sulphurous acid + oxygen → sulfuric acid
2H₂SO₃ + O₂ → 2H₂SO₄
acid rain?
rain water that is more acidic than usual due to air pollution
effects of acid rain?
~kills trees
~kills fish
~weathers limestone
~corrodes metals
nitrogen oxides
~causes acid rain
~NO2 forms dilute nitric acid when it dissolves in the water in the clouds. It is a red-brown toxic gas that can cause respiratory diseases like Bronchitis.
what do catalytic converters do to NOx?
turn nitrogen oxides into nitrogen to form a harmful photochemical smog
what does photochemical smog cause?
triggers asthma, causes lung and heart diseases
