SC17a Group 1 Flashcards
what type of metals are group 1?
alkali metals
lithium and water reaction?
bubbles fiercely on the surface
sodium and water reaction?
melts into a ball and fizzes about the surface
potassium and water reaction?
bursts into flame and flies about the surface
properties of alkali metals?
~Good conductors of electricity.
~Low melting points and boiling points.
~React with oxygen.
~Soft solids.
~Shiny and metallic.
~Low density.
what does alkali + water produce
alkaline solution + hydrogen gas
potassium + oxygen →
potassium oxide
lithium + water →
lithium hydroxide + hydrogen
why is potassium more reactive then lithium?
potassium’s outer electron is further away from the nucleus = less attraction = easier to get rid of it to get a full outer shell.
patterns in group 1?
reactivity increases as you go down
