SC18c Catalysts and Activation Energy Flashcards
catalyst?
a substance that speeds up chemical reactions without being used up
3 things about catalysts?
~do not alter the products of the reaction
~they are not changed chemically at the end of the reaction
~mass of catalyst is the same before and after the reaction
enzymes?
protein molecules produced by living organisms that act as catalysts in biological reactions
active site?
each enzyme molecule has a part with a specific shape that only fits ones substrate
substrate (reactant molecule?
fit the shape of the active site
what can cause an enzyme to denature?
~temperature
~pH
denature?
change the shape of active site so the substrate no longer fits
use of enzymes and what happens?
fermentation (make alcoholic drinks) - enzyme catalyses the reaction in which glucose is converted into ethanol (alcohol) and carbon dioxide
how do catalysts work?
they provide an alternate reaction route, which needs less activation energy
what do catalysts cause?
as less energy is needed to start the reaction, more reactant molecules have enough energy so more collisions are successful.
