SC5b Ionic lattices Flashcards
when is the suffix ide used?
If the compound is ionic, then the name of the cation (usually metal) comes first, followed by the ‘compound’ name of the anion. To find the compound name of an anion, replace the end of the element’s name with ‘ide’.
ion formula of ammonium
NH₄ +
ion formula for nitrate
NO₃ -
ion formula for hydroxide
OH -
ion formula for carbonate
CO₃² -
ion formula for sulfate
SO₄² -
ion formula for sulfite
SO₃² -
when is the suffix ate
if the anion is polyatomic and contains oxygen then the suffix is ate
4 things the formula for an ionic substance is …
~the simplest ratio of atoms
~contains no 1’s
~has no large numbers
~neutral overall so has no charges
how to use ‘swapsies’ for the formulae of ionic compounds
use the ionic charge and the product will be the swapped version of charges.
Al3+ O2- —> Al2O3
work out the formulae of magnesium hydroxide
Mg(OH)2
lattice?
An arrangement of many particles that are bonded together in a fixed, regular, grid-like pattern
ionic structure of an ionic compound
Oppositely charged ions are held together by strong electrostatic forces (ionic bonds). They are packed together in a lattice
Potassium iodide and potassium iodate which contains the ion IO3- are both used in health supplements.
Give the formula for both compounds (1 mark)
potassium iodide KI
potassium iodate KIO₃
Potassium iodide and potassium iodate which contains the ion IO3- are both used in health supplements.
Compare and contrast these two compounds (2 marks)
Similarity: Ionic compounds/formed by loss or gain of electrons/lattice structures/held together by electrostatic forces/contain the elements potassium and iodine
Difference: Potassium iodate also contains the element oxygen/potassium iodide only contains 2 elements but potassium iodate contains 3
