SB9h Preserving Biodiversity Flashcards
Why should biodiversity be preserved?
Preserving biodiversity is important because:
It protects species and communities.
It protects the environment – forests prevent flooding, rockslides, etc.
Diverse habitats provide shelter and food for a lot of animals.
Habitats with high biodiversity can be important for tourism and be
national landmarks – or just pretty to look at.
Many plants and animals can be used as a source of medicines or other
products – aspirin, pain killers, antihistamines, etc.
What is conservation?
Conservation is when a habitat or
endangered species is protected through
various efforts.
What is reforestation?
planting trees in areas
that were cleared for farming or urban
development.
What are endangered species?
species that are
at risk of becoming extinct
In Situ Conservation
Preferred to protect and manage species in their natural habitat
Species recover in their natural habitat
Humans must enhance the available shelter and sources of food by introducing methods to protect them
Ex Situ
When habitat of species damaged or destroyed then the organism are being removed from their natural habitat
Species are bred in captivity until they increase in population
Point of reforestation
Increase the number of different habitats, increase the number of different species in area/biodiversity
Help to resist flooding
