SB9e Assessing polution Flashcards
What is an Indicator species?
An indicator species is a species that is particularly sensitive or tolerant of
pollution, so that its presence or absence can be used as a measure of
pollution
What are some examples of an indicator species
Examples of indicator species:
Lichen
Blackspot fungus
Aquatic species
Explain Blackspot fungus as an indicator species
If blackspot fungus is present =
less sulphur in atmosphere
If blackspot fungus is absent =
high levels of sulphur in
atmosphere
Explain lichen as an indicator species
Presence of lichen = low pollution / low Sulphur dioxide levels
Absence of lichen = high pollution / high Sulphur dioxide levels
Flat lichen present = high pollution / high Sulphur dioxide levels
Leafy lichen present = low pollution / low Sulphur dioxide levels
Name the aquatic species that show the water pollution levels are low.
Stonefly nymph
dragonfly nymph
Name the aquatic species that show the water pollution levels are High.
bloodworm
sludge worm
no life
