SB7c Flashcards
How many days does the Menstrual cycle last?
28 days
What happens in the beginnings of the menstrual cycle?
mensuration , it is when the uterus lining breaks down and is lost with the unfertilized egg cell
What day does mensuration start and end? and what happens at the end of mensturation?
It starts around day 1-5 and ends around day 10 where the uterus lining starts to thicken again
What is ovulation?
When the ovary releases the egg
When does ovulation occur?
day 13-15
What happens after ovulation?
The uterus lining continues to thicken
The egg cell travels along the oviduct to the uterus
Name the 4 sex hormones that take part of the menstrual cycle.
Progesterone
Estrogen
LH
FSH
What is the function of Progesterone during the menstrual cycle?
Keep uterus lining thick Prevents production of FSH and LH (stopping
ovulation
What is the function of Oestrogen during the menstrual cycle?
Decreases FSH production Helps the repair of uterus lining
Female secondary characteristics
What is the function of LH during the menstrual cycle?
Causes ovulation
How is each sex hormone produced?
Progesterone
(produced by corpus luteum and then placenta)
Oestrogen
(produced in ovary)
LH
(produced pituitary gland)
FSH
(produced pituitary gland)
What is the function of FSH during the menstrual cycle?
Prevents LH production in females and stimulates follicle development
What happens inside the ovary during the 28 days of the menstruation cycle
Day 1-13:
egg developing inside the growing follicle
Day 14:
ovulation – egg released from follicle
Day 15-28:
empty follicle turns into corpus
luteum (yellow body)
What does contraception refer to?
Contraception refers to the prevention of fertilisation or pregnancyW
What are the two types of contraception? and how do they stop fertilization?
o Physical – preventing the sperm cell from reaching the egg cell.
o Chemical – affecting hormones and ovulation
