What does ART stand for?
Assisted Reproductive Technology
State 2 examples of ART.
Hormone therapy
In vitro fertilisation (IVF)
What is the aim of ART?
ART aims to increase the chances of pregnancy to occur.
Who is Clomifene therapy aimed at?
it is aimed at women that rarely or never release egg cells
How does Clomifene work?
Clomifene is a drug that results in an increase of the concentration of FSH and LH in the blood.
FSH triggers the maturation of an egg cell in the ovaries.
LH triggers ovulation.
When is In vitro fertilisation (IVF) used?
it is used when the oviducts are blocked or if the
man has a low sperm count
What are the 4 steps of In vitro fertilisation (IVF)?
- Egg follicle maturation stimulated by hormones
- Egg cells released by many follicles and taken from ovary and at the same time sperm cells are taken form a man
- eggs and sperm combine to allow fertilisation
- one or two health embryos are placed in the uterus
When do we use Egg donation?
When the woman is infertile which means the woman’s ovaries aren’t producing eggs
How are surrogate mothers used as a Infertility treatment?
if the woman isn’t able to grow an embryo in her
uterus, then her partner’s sperm can be used to fertilise her eggs (or
another woman’s eggs)
