SB6c Flashcards

1
Q

What is the adaptation for a large tree?

A

 Large roots (surface area) to absorb water and mineral ions
from the soil.

 Large roots to anchor the tree to the ground.

 Covers a large area where leaves fall and decay to provide
additional minerals for the tree

Q

What are the adaptation of root hair cells and explain how they help the plant.

A

Long = large surface area for more diffusion

Thin = short distance for substances to move, making diffusion faster

Q

Why do plants need minerals?

A

Mineral ions are needed by the plants for different uses:

 Nitrates are needed to make proteins.
 Phosphates are needed to make DNA.
 Magnesium is needed to make chlorophyll

Q

What are the similarities between the Xylem and phloem tissues?

A

Both transport substances through the plant

Both have pores and form hollow tubes

Both xylem and phloem cells lose their nucleus.

Q

What are the differences between the Xylem and Phloem tissues?

A

Xylem transports water and minerals upwards and phloem transports sucrose, other sugars and proteins downwards and upwards.

Xylem is made of dead cells, phloem is made of living cells (sieve tubes).

Xylem cell walls contain lignin but phloem does not

Phloemhas companion cells, but xylem does not.

Q

What is the prepose of companion cells?

A

Packed with mitochondria to provide energy to substances so they can
be transported by active transport through the phloem tissue
