SB9f Parasitism and mutualism Flashcards
What is parasitism?
Parasitism is a feeding relationship where the parasite (feeding organism)
benefits by feeding off a host organism, causing harm to the host.
What is mutualism?
Mutualism is a relationship where
organisms that live together both
benefit from the relationship.
What is a symbiotic relationship?
Symbiotic are relationships where two or more organisms interact. They
could be parasitic or mutualistic
Give 3 examples of Parasitic relationship.
Tapeworm in small intestine of humans
Lice (fleas) on head
Roundworm causing elephantiasis
Give 3 examples Mutualistic Relationship.
Clownfish with anemone
Cleaner fish (clean teeth)
Oxpeckers (birds eating insects from
animals)
Critical Mutualistic Relationship
Coral polyps and single celled algae
The algae can survive in the water, but are better protected inside a polyp
of a coral. The algae photosynthesise and provide food for the animal
(coral). Thus, one provides food and the other shelter.
