SB7a Flashcards

1
Q

What are Hormones?

A

Hormones are chemicals produced in
one organ/gland, released into the
blood to reach another organ (target
organ) and exert its effect (carry out
its function) there

Q

What is the Hypothalamus and state its purpose.

A

Hypothalamus is an area of the
brain that is responsible for
controlling the hormonal system
and maintaining homeostasis.

Q

What is Homeostasis?

A

Homeostasis is defined as the process through which organisms can
maintain internal body conditions within normal ranges while adjusting to changing external conditions.

Q

What do we mean when we say ‘Homeostasis is a dynamic process’?

A

Internal conditions vary continuously because organisms are exposed to different external conditions all the time

Q

State the 6 organs and their functions during homeostasis.

A

 Brain: controls temperature (hypothalamus), water and carbon
dioxide levels.

 Lungs: remove carbon dioxide.

 Pancreas: produces insulin and glucagon to control blood glucose
levels.

 Kidneys: control water and mineral ion levels (osmoregulation).

 Muscles: thermoregulation (shivering).

 Skin: thermoregulation.

Q

Compare and contrast Nervous System the and the Hormonal System.

A

The Nervous system uses Electrical Impulses in order to deliver messages while the hormonal system uses hormones

The speed of response of the nervous system is fast whiles the speed of response of the hormonal system is slow

The duration of the response of the nervous system is fast while the hormonal system is slow

The area of response of the Nervous System is Localizedy whilst the Hormonal System is Widespread, throughout the body
