SB2e - The Brain Flashcards
Name the three areas of the brain and their location.
Cerebral cortex - two halves called cerebral hemispheres
Cerebellum - back of the brain
Medulla oblongata - connect brain and spinal cord
What are the functions of the Cerebral cortex?
Divided into cerebral hemispheres and different sections that
control emotions, speech, vision, taste, smell and all the senses,
memories, and conscious thought.
What are the functions of the Cerebellum?
Controls balance and posture.
Coordinates muscle movement
What are the functions of the Medulla oblongata?
Controls heart rate.
Controls breathing rate.
Controls reflexes.
Connects the brain to the spinal cord.
Why can brain surgery be carried out while the patient is awake?
because patients do not feel pain during brain surgery because the brain does not
have any receptors
