SB1b - Plant and animal cells Flashcards
What are cells?
Cells are the smallest living unit.
Name me all the cell structures within the animal cell.
Cytoplasm
Nucleus
cell membrane
mitochondria
ribosomes
What is a Cytoplasm?
It is a jelly-like substance that contains dissolved nutrients and salts and structures called organelles. It is where many of the chemical reactions occur within the cell
What is a Nucleus?
A nucleus contains genetic material which includes DNA and it the part of the cell that controls all of its activities
What is a cell membrane?
a cell membrane is a semi-permeable membrane that allows some substances to pass but not others . It controls the movement of substances in and out of the cell
What are mitochondria?
Mitochondria are organelles that contain enzyme which are used for respiration. It is where most of the energy of the cell is released in respiration
What is a ribosome?
Tiny structures where protein synthesis occurs (proteins are made)
What is cell staining?
Staining cells refers to the coloring of cells or their parts in order to make them
visible or easier to distinguish
What are the steps in which we take in order to stain a cell?
- Collect cells and place them on a glass slide
- Add a stain
- Squash cells and stain with a cover slip creating a thin layer of cells
- Heat to intensify stain
Name me all the cell structures within a PLANT cell.
Cytoplasm
Nucleus
cell membrane
mitochondria
ribosomes
chloroplasts
cell wall
permanent vacuole
What is a Chloroplast? what do they contain?
a chloroplast is an organelle that contain green pigment called chlorophyll, which absolves light energy for photosynthesis it also contains the enzymes needed for photosynthesis
What is a cell wall? what are plant cell walls made of
a wall shielding the cell which provides structure and protection
they are made of cellulose
What is a permanent vacuole?
it is a sack containing nutrient for the cell such as cell sap which is there in order to keep the cell swollen
