SB2b - Growth in Animals Flashcards
What is growth?
- Growth is the increase in size, length
and mass, and an increase in cell
number.
What are the two steps in which growth takes place in living organisms?
1) Cell division (mitosis) that
increases the number of cells
2) Cell growth where the new cells
become bigger
What does it mean when a cell becomes cancerous?
it begins to grow and divide uncontrollably
What is a tumour?
- A group of cancerous cells produces a
growth called a tumour
What is the purpose of percentiles?
Percentiles are used to compare certain characteristics against the total population
Describe how the Red blood cell has adapted to its function?
Have haemoglobin, no nucleus and biconcave disc shape to
increase their surface area and carry MORE oxygen
Describe how the Nerve cell has adapted to its function?
Very long and thin to carry signals fast
Describe how the Fat cell has adapted to its function?
Fat cells Store fat to release a lot of energy
Describe how the Muscle cell has adapted to its function?
Have special proteins that help it contract and move the body
when needed, plus many mitochondria to produce energy
