SB2c - Growth in Plants Flashcards
What are the 4 organs of plants?
Leaves
Flowers
Stem
Roots
Name the three regions involved in the growth of plants?
Meristem
Zone of elongation
Zone of differentiation
What happens at the Meristem?
the region of cell division (mitosis
What happens at the zone of elongation?
cells grow longer
What happens at the zone of differentiation?
plant cells become specialised
into different types of cells eg. Root hair cells
Describe Root hair cells and explain how they are adapted to carry their function.
Root hair cells have long extensions that increases surface area for
absorbing water and dissolved mineral salts
Describe Palisade cells and explain how they are adapted to carry their function.
Palisade cells in the leaf have many chloroplasts that contain chlorophyll
for capturing energy from light for photosynthesis, which takes place in these
cells.
Describe Guard cells and explain how they are adapted to carry their function.
Guard cells are able to change shape and to open and close the
pore/stoma between them, and contain many mitochondria to provide energy
for this
Growth can be measured in many ways, including change in:
- Height
- Leaf surface area
- Mass
