Sampling Flashcards
What is a target population?
People who we wish to investigate, can be specific or to all humans.
What is a study population?
A group of people from the target population who the study is conducted on.
What is volunteer/ self-selected sampling?
People who have chosen to participate in the study (can be advertised)
What is random sampleing?
Anyone in the target population has an equal chance of being selected for the study.
What is opportunity sampling?
Asking members of the population who fit the criteria if they are willing to participate in the study.
What is stratified sampling?
Different categories of the target population chosen to make a representive sample.
What are some strengths of volunteer sampleimg?
-Easy to do
-People chose to be involved so is ethical (giving consent).
What are some weaknesses of volunteer sampling?
-Ppts can have shared characteristics so less generalisable.
What is a strength of opportunity sampling?
-Quick and convenient.
-Easy to do.
What is a weakness of opportunity sampling?
-Ppts can have shared characteristics so less generalisable.
-Unrepresentive sample.
What is a strength of random sampling?
-Not biased on behalf of the researcher.
What is a weakness of random sampling?
-Not easy to do with a large sample.
What is a strength of stratified sampling?
-Not bias
-Very generalisable.
What is a weakness of stratified sampling?
-Hard to do and takes a long time.
