Observations Flashcards
What is a non-experimental method?
-Iv is is not manipulated to see effect on DV.
-Can see ppts in own environment.
-Study more complex interactions between variables in a natural way.
What does naturalistic mean? What is an advantage and disadvantage?
-In a natural situation/ environment.
S-Less demand characteristics
W-Not standardised
What does structured mean? What is a strength and weakness?
-Controlling for variables in an artificial setting.
S-Is standardised
W-More demand characteristics.
What does covert mean? What is a strength and weakness?
-Don’t know they are being observed.
S-Less demand characteristics.
W-Consent/ethical issues
What does overt mean? What is a strength and weakness?
-People know they are being observed.
S- less ethical issues (consent).
W-more demand charcteristics.
What does participant mean? What is a strength and weakness?
-Someone in the group who conducts the experiment is being observed.
S- more in depth data collected.
W-more researcher bias.
What does non-participant mean? What is a strength and weakness?
-Observation done by someone in the group who is not observed.
S-Less researcher bias
W-Not as in depth data collected.
What is event sampling?
Uses a coding scheme to total how many times a certain event occurs.
What is continuous sampling?
Make notes of everything that is happening.
What is time sampling?
Recording behaviour every Nth time and write the observation in that moment.
