Central Tendency Flashcards
What is central tendency?
The value or figure which represents the whole series.
How do you calculate a mean?
The total of all the values divided by the number of participants.
How do you calculate a median?
The middle value from an ordered list of the values.
How do you calculate a mode?
The value which appears the most often in a series.
What is are the strengths of a mean?
-It is based on all the values
–Simple to calculate and understand.
When do you use a scatter plot?
When graphing correlational data.
When do you use a histogram?
When graphing frequency or continuous data.
When do you use a bar chart?
When you are graphing a mean, mode or median.
What are the weaknesses of a median?
-Not based on all values(just one or two numbers out of the series.
-Not capable of further mathematical manipulation.
What are the strengths of a median?
It is not effected by extreme values/outliers.
-It can be located graphically.
What are the weaknesses of a mode?
-It is not based on all results.
-Not capable of further mathematical manipulation.
What are the strengths of a mode?
-It is not affected by extreme values.
–Can be determind graphically.
What is the weaknesses of a mean?
-It is affected by extreme values/outliers
–Cannot be easily graphically represented.
