Mann Whitney U Test Flashcards
What do statistical tests show?
If the results we have found are due to chance or a link between variables.
What is a ‘p’ value?
The probability or chance of something happening.
What does it mean if a value is significant?
It is not due to chance and the variables do have a relationship.
What is ‘p’ typically in psychology?
p</ 0.05
What is a type 1 error?
When a result is found to be significant but it is actually wrong (false positive)
What is a type 2 error?
When a result is found to be non-significant but it actually is (false negative).
What is a type 1 error caused by?
By poor research design or using a level of significance which is too lenient.
What is a type 2 error caused by?
Using a too stringent level of signifigance.
Why might a Mann Whitney test be used?
-Independent measures have been used.
-Uses ordinal or interval data.
-Looking for a difference between groups.
