Q

What is epsom salt?

A

Epsom salt is technically magnesium sulfate, a compound of magnesium, sulfur, and oxygen that’s readily absorbed through the skin, and is often used as a bath soak. Epsom salts can be particularly helpful for soothing muscular pain and joint inflammation; in general, magnesium is important for cardiovascular and bone health, and it helps regulate nerve and muscle function (Low Dog, 2016)

Q

What is baking soda?

A

Baking soda, sodium bicarbonate, is also technically a salt. You may already be familiar with the use of baking soda as a DIY hack for drawing splinters or soothing bee stings and insect bites. It’s often used in tooth powders as a mild abrasive, and may also be included in homemade or commercial skin products to regulate pH (acid-base balance), or as a deodorant.
