Essential Oils Flashcards
What is the main concern with using EO’s in skin care products
EO’s, unlike synthetics, are not innert, they trigger physiological respones and processes within the body.
This means that they can potentially interact with medication, and effect people who are pregnant, or who have underlying health concerns.
Many contain components that either are or can become irritating or sensitizing.
In some people it can result in allergic reactions and in those with autoimmune conditions it can trigger an immune episode.
Some components are also phototoxic and can cause skin blemishes, burns or blisters.
Which mediums are not considered safe carriers and why?
Water, alcohol, glycerin, vinegar, and hydrosol are not considered safe carriers for EOs, as they do not effectively disperse the EOs in the carrier (Tisserand Institute, n.d.).
What is usually added to “unsafe” carriers in order to better disperse the EO’s?
Solubol
What do the terms therapeutic grade or cosmetic grade mean?
Although you may see essential oils marketed as “therapeutic grade” or “cosmetic grade,” these terms don’t have much meaning, since there is no generally accepted grade or certification system for essential oils.
Essentially, these terms are marketing phrases used to deceive the public.
What are the appropriate dilution for EO’s
A 1% dilution (this means that 1% of the final product is essential oil) is appropriate for children under 12 years old, individuals over 65 years old, those who are pregnant or lactating (note that some oils are contraindicated in this case), those with chemical sensitivity, and individuals with long-term illnesses, cancer, or immune system disorders. This dilution is also appropriate for daily facial care.
For a 1% Dilution
Drops of essential oil = V x 29.6 x 20 x 0.01
Drops of essential oil = V x 5.92
A 2% dilution is appropriate for body care, natural perfumes, bath oils, and other blends used daily by generally healthy people over 12 years old and under 65 years old.
For a 2% Dilution
Drops of essential oil = V x 29.6 x 20 x 0.02
Drops of essential oil = V x 11.84
A 3-5% dilution is appropriate when creating a blend for individuals over 12 years old and under 65 years old with a specific, acute health concern needing short-term support, such as headaches, burns, pains, colds, or the flu.
For a 3% Dilution
Drops of essential oil = V x 29.6 x 20 x 0.03
Drops of essential oil = V x 17.76
For easy calculation: approx 5 drops per fluid ounce(oz)
