Salt Preparations (mocks) Flashcards
1
Q
Describe an experiment to prepare a pure, dry sample of a soluble salt, starting from an insoluble reactant.
A
- Measure acid into beaker
- Warm up acid to speed up reaction
- Add solid until no more will dissolve
- Filter to remove excess solid
- Filtrate contains solution of soluble salt
- Heat filtrate until saturation point
- Leave overnight to form crystals
- Dry in a warm oven.
2
Q
How would you prepare an insoluble salt from two soluble reactants?
A
By precipitation
3
Q
How would you prepare a soluble salt containing sodium, potassium and ammonium?
A
Titration
4
Q
Give the formula for a titration
A
Soluble base + acid —> salt + water
5
Q
Give the 3 possible formulas for an insoluble base + acid
A
Metal oxide + acid -> salt + water
Metal carbonate + acid -> salt + water + CO2
Metal hydroxide + acid -> salt + water
6
Q
Describe a titration
A
- Fill burette with acid
- Pipette base into conical flask
- Add indicator
- Add acid gradually until colour change
- Record volume added
- Repeat until 3+ concordant results
- Make an average
